The visually striking book is a testament to the unique collaboration, lasting for three decades, between photographer and illustrator Matt Mahurin and musician Tom Waits. Mahurin, who has photographed magazine covers, album covers, and directed music videos with Waits, has resurrected film negatives that were stored away, which became a springboard for exploring his own surreal, poetic, and occasionally dark visions. The images vary, from traditional portraits capturing Tom at a concert – but most of them are richly imaginative scenes in which Waits is more of a muse than a musician. Alongside the diverse images, the book includes a foreword by Tom Waits, Mahurin's essay on their long-standing collaboration, and twenty original drawings, paintings, photographs, and digital illustrations inspired by the titles of Waits's songs. Matt Mahurin is an American illustrator, photographer, and film director. Mahurin's work has appeared in magazines and newspapers such as Time, Newsweek, Mother Jones, Rolling Stone, New York Times, the Museum of Modern Art, and at the Sundance Film Festival.
