The idea of establishing a permanent militia, a standing army, did not take long to emerge. And since the Crusader states were born from a military action of the Roman Catholic Church, as European knights subdued new lands at the call and with the blessing of the Pope and in the name of the cross, this new militia, first in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and then in the other three Crusader states, took on a form that reflected this – the spiritual military order was born: the Order of the Templars.
