Beschreibung
Against the backdrop of the story of Black Elk, John G. Neihardt aimed to depict the tragic struggle of North American Indians against the relentlessly advancing machinery of the white man's advanced civilization. The Indians fought not only for their territory but also for the preservation of their original way of life. The book Black Elk Speaks retains the personal tone of the Indian narrator, who thus becomes the spokesperson and symbol of the Lakota and prairie Indians in general. His life embodied the gradual defeat of the Lakota world. Neihardt hoped that by describing this futile and tragic struggle, he would evoke a sense of compassion in readers for the dying culture of the Plains Indians.
