The detective story A Death Smelled of Pine Grove takes place in a future several hundred years away. The world is dominated by the Chinese. Prague is a provincial city of one hundred thousand, where people walk or ride rickshaws. No one has a mobile phone, airplanes do not fly, and technical civilization has faded away. However, epidemics are wreaking havoc more thoroughly than in the present. In Prague, plagued by disease and heat, several mysterious deaths occur in the palaces of the Chinese nobility. Judge Li investigates, along with his fantastic assistants, who have come from the detective novels of Robert van Gulik. The original Prague inhabitants are represented by "Czech intelligentsia," half dissidents and half revivalists, who still have a taste for beer.
