Beschreibung
The book focuses on the life of the famous Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci, who won at the Olympics in Montreal at the age of fourteen. The author describes the unfree journey of the famous athlete: just as she freed herself from the oversight of the communist state security, she became the object of attention from Western media. However, they also ostentatiously manipulated her into the role of a trained monkey. She reflects on how the surrounding world perceived the miraculous girl when it created a legend around her, a kind of 'myth of Nadia', and within a few years demythologized the same girl. She also outlines an interesting comparison of the roles that famous personalities, especially athletes, occupied on both sides of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. The author draws on real facts concerning the life of the famous Romanian artistic gymnast, but it is not a biography, as it might seem at first glance. It has brought the author more than a dozen awards, including the prestigious Grand prix de l'héroïne Madame Figaro, Prix Ouest-France Etonnants Voyageurs, Prix Jules Rimet, and Prix version Femina.
