The second volume of Mark Twain’s extensive three-volume memoirs was first published in 2010, one hundred years after his death. Rather than a conventional autobiography, it is a collection of anecdotes, “gossip” and reflections on life, on which Twain worked for several years. His painfully honest examination of his own life and the world is essential for understanding this complex figure in world literature and his work. Twain himself writes: “We are what we remember. Without memory we disappear, cease to exist, our past is erased, and yet we devote little attention to memory…” This Czech translation offers a wide readership a glimpse into Twain’s memory, heart and soul.
