Jules Janin, as a representative of the French frenetic school, built upon the English Gothic novel and created his own peculiar parody. This distinctive pastiche mixed not only a considerable dose of black humor but also seasoned it with impressive lyricism. The explosive mixture with a spark of madness is promised by sinister characters, the setting of a morgue, a gallows, an executioner, or the Clamart cemetery. French critics were certain that over all of this hovered the odor of sulfur, and the morbid darkness would engulf both the hero and the reader of the story. However, the novel actually secured the author a place in the limelight of European romanticism.
