Beschreibung
The collection of 109 stories about Krakonoš was compiled from the books of Paul Johannes Praetorius, specifically from the three-volume work Daemonologia Rubenzalii Silezii (Leipzig, 1662-1665) and from the book Satyrus Etymologicus (Leipzig, 1672). This author, according to general consensus, preserves the oldest form of Krakonoš most faithfully, as it was recounted among the Czech and German inhabitants of the entire Krkonoš area, in northeastern Bohemia and in the adjacent part of Silesia. In the stories about Krakonoš, Praetorius organically combines a naively realistic view of reality with a sense of the grotesque in situations, their witty plots, and hearty, folk humor. He skillfully alternates between stories in which folk wisdom prevails, the ethos of the people with their view on the victory of good over evil, justice over injustice and deceit, and stories that showcase horror, dread, demonism, and evil.
