Beschreibung
Patrik Ouředník's dictionary offers a different Czech than we are used to. Ouředník cleverly refers to it non-technically as 'unconventional Czech' – its boundaries are quite difficult to define precisely. It includes names and phrases that are not found in any dictionary guides, but also those that are known even to the academic Dictionary of Standard Czech. There are elements from argot, slang, as well as common colloquial, folk, and quite neutral Czech; we find borrowings of correct foreign words that have gained expressiveness through their transfer to the domestic environment, as well as solid intellectualisms grotesquely contextualized. There are words and idioms captured in a state of birth, creations of spontaneous linguistic creativity that are actually only 'accidentally' fixed, and now directly codified in the dictionary, but there are also expressions with a thousand-year history that, by their immediate reference to human corporeality, have been condemned to unofficial status. The Czech language's smut book contains 1,260 thematic groups and subgroups and over 16,000 lexemes.
