The thirteenth volume of Battles and Fates of Warriors is dedicated to the wars of the Risorgimento, the struggle for Italian independence. From the side of the Austrian Empire, it was about maintaining the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom, which began to collapse in the revolutionary year of 1848. Old Field Marshal Radetzky, who commanded the army in Italy, had to face a rebellion in Milan, evacuate Lombardy, and fight against the Sardinian-Piedmontese King Charles Albert, who for the first time defeated Piedmont at Custoza in 1848 and a year later won against him at Novara in another war. Ten years later, when Radetzky was no longer alive, a new war began, this time not only with Piedmontese but also with French forces, and Austrian soldiers went into battle to the sounds of Strauss's Radetzky March. They fought bravely but lost at Magenta and ultimately in the bloody battle at Solferino, and Emperor Franz Joseph I, who personally commanded them, lost Lombardy...
