No one among Napoleon's generals has a worse reputation than Dominique Vandamme (1770–1830). Memoirs and literature about him claim that he was the worst ruffian, a violent man, a plunderer, and much worse, but all of this is based on lies from contemporary, mostly German pamphlets. Who was this soldier really, whose career was marked by dazzling successes and monumental misfortunes? He fought for the revolution from 1792, shone at Austerlitz in 1805, faithfully served Napoleon, who, however, did not appreciate his services on several occasions. He fatally lost in 1813 at Chlumec and Přestanova, where Napoleon left him in the lurch, yet he risked his life for him even in the last campaign of 1815, in the battles of Ligny and Wavre, and defended Paris even when Napoleon had abdicated for the second time...
