Beschreibung
Salvos Under Sails is a story of rivalry between France and Great Britain for control of the seas and oceans. The hostility between the two countries, which began at the end of Louis XIV's reign, continued in the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War, and peaked when France allied with the American colonies that began a war for their independence against Britain. Battles were fought in the Mediterranean, off the western shores of France, in the Antilles, off the coasts of Canada and North America, and in the Indian Ocean. The line ships fought battles at Toulon and Minorca, at Cape Finisterre, off the island of Ouessant and the Cardinaux rocks, in Chesapeake Bay, where the French significantly contributed to the victory of the USA at the islands of Saintes and at Cuddalore, and the French Marine Royale was a worthy opponent of the Royal Navy in these battles. The second volume of Salvos Under Sails will be dedicated to naval wars during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire.
