Captain van Toch discovers remarkable intelligent creatures resembling salamanders in the Pacific Ocean. In his desire for wealth, he begins a trade with them. Initially, he supplies them with metal knives for defense against sharks, and in return, the salamanders bring him found pearls. However, everything escalates into unexpected dimensions. People begin to enslave the salamanders and exploit them as cheap labor for underwater construction. The salamander population, however, uncontrollably multiplies and starts to threaten humanity... Čapek's world-famous work serves as a warning against human indifference, the desire for power, and the negative phenomena of modern civilization.
