Beschreibung

This Czech-language historical book is the second volume of the Battles and Fates of Warriors project, following Wars for Faith and the four-volume Knights’ Battles and Fates. It covers a quarter-century of conflicts before the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War, including Henry IV’s struggle for the French throne, Sigismund III Vasa’s fight for the Swedish throne, and the efforts of Rudolf II to secure the Bohemian throne through the incursion of the Passau troops. Its main focus is the so-called Bohemian War, which began in May 1618 when the emperor’s governors were thrown from the windows of Prague Castle. The Estates’ Revolt is followed through the contrasting perspectives of three leading participants: the imperial commander-in-chief Buquoy, the Estates’ lieutenant general Thurn and the mercenary adventurer Mansfeld. The fateful Battle of White Mountain is also recounted from the viewpoints of Counts Buquoy and Thurn, alongside wartime experiences and impressions of a cavalry charge written by the young Count Anhalt.
