Napoleon Bonaparte earned his general's epaulettes by capturing Toulon, commanding the army in Italy to suppress an attempt at a royalist coup in Paris, and in 1796 he began his first victorious campaign. In 1798, he conquered Egypt and upon returning to France, he overthrew the Directory government. As First Consul, he successfully completed the Second Italian Campaign and brought peace to France after a long time.
