Beschreibung

The Fall of the Roman Empire is the last volume of a five-part project on the military history of ancient Rome, covering a long period from the wars of the Flavian dynasty after 69 AD to the sacking of Rome by Alaric in 410. It encompasses an immense number of battles and campaigns of Roman emperors and their generals, bloody fights with neighboring Persians, with so-called barbarians, and internal wars in which one emperor tried to overthrow another. The period of expansion to the east, particularly into Mesopotamia and Dacia, represented the last conquest efforts of the Roman legions, after which only the attempt to maintain the conquered territory followed, increasingly focusing on defending the Danube border against ever-growing incursions, especially by the Goths. The synthesis of the military history of the Roman Empire from the end of the 1st century to the collapse of the military power of the Western Roman Empire is unparalleled even in Western literature.
