Beschreibung

WARS WITH JUGURTHA, THE CIMBRI, THE TEUTONS, AND MITHRIDATES, THE CIVIL WAR AND THE SPARTACUS UPRISING Wars Without End is the second volume of a project on the military history of ancient Rome, once again full of stories about commanders and soldiers, about the campaigns they underwent, about victorious or lost battles on land and at sea, about marches, camping, attacks, defenses, sieges, about glory and suffering during the wars with Jugurtha in Africa, Mithridates in Asia Minor, and the invasion of the Cimbri and Teutons in Gaul. It also discusses how in the harsh and unknown years of the civil war between Marius, Sulla, and Cinna, military virtues were sacrificed, replaced by betrayals, murders of their own commanders, and desertions. Nevertheless, these were the years in which the legions transformed from a civic army into a professional military force and underwent tactical reforms inaccurately attributed to Gaius Marius. In this period, the manipular legions transformed into cohort legions. The second volume of the Roman Wars ends with Crassus's victory over Spartacus, and the third will encompass the time of the triumvirate, the peak of Caesar's military glory, his battles in Gaul, and the civil war with Pompey. It will continue until the victory over Caesar's assassins and Octavian's struggle with Mark Antony.
