This Czech-language crime novel follows a group of investigators led by Inspector Čemus, along with police officers from several stations, as they confront various crimes and people beyond the law. Their investigations begin from nothing and lead through the stories of victims and perpetrators in search of a justice that is often deceptive. As twilight thickens over the city, something is secretly being prepared, and death may be sharpening its scythe. The investigators must face the failings of society while searching for the brighter qualities in people. The crime cases appear in two loosely connected books, Abandoned Harbors and Abandoned Garden.
