Beschreibung
THE LATIN, ETRUSCAN, GAULISH, AND SAMNITE WARS, THE WAR WITH PYRRHUS, THREE PUNIC WARS AND THREE MACEDONIAN WARS Victors over Carthage is a book about the military history of ancient Rome, full of stories about commanders and soldiers, about the campaigns they undertook, about the battles won or lost on land and at sea, about marches, camping, attacks, defenses, sieges, about glory, suffering, and the qualities of true Roman soldiers, which were dignitas - dignity, disciplina - discipline, and virtus - bravery. It also describes what the legions looked like, how they maneuvered, what they were composed of, what they fought with, and how they lived. The first volume of the Roman Wars cycle begins with the time before the birth of the legions, continues through the birth of the citizen army of the Roman Republic, the transformation from phalanx to manipular legion, and its existence until it changed into the cohort legion and a professional army. It recounts wars from a time when it is difficult to separate truth from legend, through the war with Pyrrhus to the history of the Punic Wars and the subjugation of Greece. The next volume will cover the twilight of the Roman Republic, the wars of Marius and Sulla both abroad and against each other, Crassus's victory over Spartacus and his defeat in battle against the Parthians, and the first triumphs of Pompey.
