The third edition of the popular monograph focuses on the effective and safe use of antibiotics. The primary goal of the discussed issue is to summarize all clinically significant information. A key emphasis is placed on the rational use of antibiotics, as improper handling of these medications has many serious negative consequences. The first – general – part discusses the fundamentals of antibiotic therapy, written from the perspective of a clinical expert, and contains concise and clinically relevant information. The second – special – part maps commonly used groups of antibiotics. Each chapter begins with an overview of the most important representatives of the given antibiotic class, continues with a summary of essential information, provides historical and etymological contexts, data on classification, mechanisms of action and resistance, and overviews of antibacterial spectrum of action and the occurrence of resistance in clinically important bacteria. For each medication, the clinically most significant adverse effects and drug interactions are described, along with typical doses for adult patients.
