Most neurological diseases leave long-term or permanent consequences of varying degrees. The number of patients with severe, previously fatal brain damage who survive but suffer from significant functional impairments is steadily increasing. For ethical and health policy reasons, a fundamental requirement is that patients achieve the best possible quality of life and independence after the completion of acute medical care and that they find their place in society again. The quality of life of patients depends primarily on the prompt initiation of neurorehabilitation, which is carried out continuously: from the acute hospitalization phase through inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation to social, family, and work reintegration. There are a large number of neurological deficits resulting from brain damage, and their severity varies – thus requiring a highly individualized and comprehensive professional approach. Timely neurorehabilitation should begin in the neurological or neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU, CCU) and is an integrated part of therapy.
