Microbiology, with its specific methods, identifies and characterizes, among other things, the source of infection. The results obtained then indicate what pathogens are involved, whether they are sensitive to the indicated antimicrobial agents, and how to prevent their spread. Proper interpretation of the results is essential for establishing a final diagnosis, which includes a detailed analysis of clinical and anamnesis data, as well as the results of basic and specialized laboratory tests. The monograph General and Clinical Microbiology presents an overview of microorganisms, namely viruses and subviral particles, bacteria, micromycetes, and protozoa, as well as some multicellular, macroscopically visible helminths and arthropods that can cause diseases in humans. It provides basic characteristics of the etiology of infectious diseases, explains the causes of certain health complications, including typical immunopathological conditions. At the same time, it deals with the characterization of basic nosological units and the methods by which they can be demonstrated. As a textbook, it emphasizes the correct procedure for identifying the source of disease and the final interpretation of the results obtained.
