Prof. MUDr. Josef Říman, DrSc., a member of several foreign scientific academies and societies, worked at the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences from its very beginnings (1951); he left in 2006 as the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. He progressed through all levels from a research fellow to a scientific worker or director of an institute, eventually holding positions as scientific secretary, vice-chairman, and from 1986 to 1989, chairman of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. In 1976, he founded and led the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences for fifteen years, playing a crucial role in the introduction of cell and gene engineering and modern biotechnology in then Czechoslovakia. He is among the pioneers in the biochemistry of retroviruses. His findings offer a new perspective on the interpretation of reverse transcription of genetic information.
