One of the most significant domestic medical publications – Lexicon medicum – is now in its third, revised edition. This joint publication by philologist Prof. PhDr. Jan Kábrt, CSc., and physician Assoc. Prof. MUDr. Jan Kábrt, CSc., has been utilized for nearly a quarter of a century by everyone who writes, translates, or wants to understand medical terminology. Lexicon medicum is undoubtedly a cultural achievement and essentially a small medical encyclopedia sui generis. The foundation of this thousand-page work is a Latin-Czech dictionary, supplemented by a shorter Czech-Latin dictionary, but additionally, it includes the Latin and Greek foundations of medical terminology, a Czech-Greek-Latin dictionary of more common medical terms, an overview of anatomical terms according to the valid nomenclature, terms indicating the position and directions of body parts, Latin-Czech names of certain specialized disciplines, chemical nomenclature and an overview of chemical elements, an overview of more common group designations for drugs, therapeutic agents, and medicinal plants, as well as pharmaceutical abbreviations.
