This Czech-language book examines how post-war German intellectuals thought about German identity. First, it traces connections between discussions of German identity in political, historiographical, philosophical and literary texts from approximately 1960 to the present. It then focuses on four important West German writers—Günter Grass, Martin Walser, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Botho Strauß—and shows that all four depart from a bipolar interpretation of society and history, with far less dependence on political events than is often assumed in accounts of modern literature. The book argues that this varied and historically shifting break with a bipolar view of the world is best explained by considering how German identity was discussed outside literature, particularly in contemporary German historiography, political science and philosophy.
