Beschreibung
This play brings together four friends from the 1990s in a luxury hotel in an unspecified location in the Czech Republic: a Hungarian, an East German, a Pole and a Czech. Their discussions about Central Europe lead them to confront not only this complex phenomenon but also their own pasts. They are closely observed by members of a younger generation, a Czech receptionist and the Polish guest’s nephew, who as observers gain a better understanding of where they come from and where they belong. The play was created during the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 through online dialogue. The two authors used their joint work on the drama to overcome both the physical separation imposed by official restrictions and possible misunderstandings arising from their different historical experiences and social backgrounds. It combines two distinct perspectives on history from two important German- and Czech-language authors who first met as author and translator, Schlink and Kafka. The contents are in Czech.
