The work of Czechoslovak architects, engineers, and other specialists in interwar Iran is a chapter of our and Iranian history that today, on both sides, few know much about. Yet Czechoslovakians made significant contributions in a country striving for rapid modernization: they built hundreds of kilometers of roads, many dozens of road and railway bridges, dozens of factories and sugar refineries, power plants, military bases, silos, and also several true gems of modernist architecture. Their artistic conviction inspired generations of Iranian creators. Reza Alirezaiyan, an Iranian architectural historian based in Dallas, USA, has spent hundreds of hours in archival research to bring this forgotten history back to light and has interviewed descendants of many who helped write it nearly a century ago. Thanks to him, we now recognize Iran as a country with which we share surprisingly much.
