Ernst Hans Gombrich (1909–2001) is undoubtedly the most famous and popular art historian of the twentieth century. The general public knows him as the author of The Story of Art, a fascinating bestseller that has sold over six million copies worldwide. However, he was primarily a respected researcher and theorist in the field of art, whose thought-provoking scholarly works deserve attention. The book Gombrich. The Secret of the Image and the Language of Art is primarily a readable and accessible introduction to the history and theory of art. Its goal is not, as Gombrich would say, to provide the reader with a list of dry data, periodizations, and tedious descriptions of well-known works, but to teach them to perceive images attentively and to truly understand the history of art. The book was created based on the author's long-standing interest in questions related to the creation and interpretation of artistic works.
