Beschreibung
Ernst Hans Gombrich (1909–2001) is undoubtedly the most famous and popular art historian of the twentieth century. The general public knows him as the author of The Story of Art, a fascinating bestseller that has sold over six million copies worldwide. However, he was primarily a respected researcher and theorist in the field of art, whose thought-provoking scholarly works deserve attention. The book Gombrich. The Secret of the Image and the Language of Art is primarily a readable and accessible introduction to the history and theory of art. Its goal is not, as Gombrich would say, to provide the reader with a list of dry data, periodizations, and tedious descriptions of well-known works, but to teach them to perceive images attentively and to truly understand the history of art. The book was created based on the author's long-standing interest in questions related to the creation and interpretation of artistic works. It does not limit itself solely to the history of art but also navigates the fields of aesthetics, philosophy, psychology, and even sociobiology, referencing both significant Gombrich's Viennese contemporaries who influenced him (such as philosopher Karl R. Popper or ethologist Konrad Lorenz) and his successors dealing with the psychology of visual representation. A successful publication, referred to by critics as 'the second story of art',...
