Marie Ebner-Eschenbach (1830–1916), originally Countess Dubská, was born in Zdislavice, Moravia, where she is also buried. She spent her life alternating between Moravia and Vienna. To establish herself as a writer, she had to overcome not only the distrust and opposition of her own family, including her husband, but also that of the entire cultural public of her time. She succeeded abundantly. As the first woman, she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna, and five years before her death, she was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. ***** In her literary beginnings, she focused on plays, later turning to writing novels, short stories, and aphorisms that remain relevant to this day.
