Beschreibung
The book provides the first thorough and multifaceted interpretation of the work and thought of Rio Preisner (1925–2007), a Czech conservative thinker, philosopher, poet, theater scholar, Germanist, and translator. Preisner made his mark in the history of Czech culture as the author of seven poetry collections, a book on totalitarianism (Critique of Totalitarianism), an analysis of American politics and culture (Americana), reflections on the meaning of Czech history (Culture Without End – a polemic with Václav Černý), an analysis of domestic and exile philosophy (Speculum), and his masterful translations (especially of Hermann Broch's novels) as well as theater studies (the work of J. N. Nestroy). Throughout his life, he remained a staunch critic of communist power, a conservative thinker emphasizing the fundamental importance of Christianity in personal life as well as in society.
