Beschreibung
A clear work by a leading art historian reflects on what is specifically German about German art. The author captures the attitudes of Germans towards their art from Romanticism to the present in a relatively small space and describes the tumultuous disputes that have surrounded it. As he convincingly demonstrates, visual art has always played a special role in Germany, distinct from other European countries, and it well reflects its painful cultural and political development after the late unification in 1871. It was primarily (but not exclusively) visual art through which Germans sought to find their cultural identity and in which they expressed an irrational fear of being influenced by foreign cultures. This was particularly evident in the 1930s during the struggles over modern art and expressionism (the only truly original German style), which culminated in its violent destruction during the Third Reich.
