Kariéra s paletou. Umělec, umění a umělectví v 19. století – Machalíková Pavla (2019)

A major theme of modern times after 1800 became the artist himself, his position in society, and the building of his artistic self-confidence in the face of an anonymous audience. The newly established public presentation of works at art exhibitions and the theme of institutionalization and reflection of artistic practice played a role. More or less stylized and staged images, through which artists captured the assertion of their profession in society, include depictions of a self-assured creator, romantic introspection of oneself, as well as the celebration and criticism of icons of both the artistic and national community. Critical analyses of various phases and contexts of this development are repeatedly part of art historical research, as well as being in the focus of related fields. The book, featuring texts by leading experts on the period, aims to grasp this theme from various contemporary perspectives and to show it in intersections connecting Czech art with the European context. The book is published in collaboration with the West Bohemian Gallery in Pilsen and the Institute of Art History of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
