THE GHOST BRIGADES are special units of the Colonial Defense Forces (CDF), elite troops whose members are created from the DNA of the deceased and transformed into perfect soldiers, sent on the most difficult missions of the CDF. They are young, fast, strong, and completely devoid of human inhibitions. The universe is a dangerous place for the human race – and it is about to become even more perilous. Three races that humanity has fought in the past have united to prevent human expansion into space. Their main support has become scientist Charles Boutin, who knows the greatest secret of the CDF. For humanity to survive, the CDF must discover why Boutin betrayed them. Jared Dirac – a clone created from Boutin's DNA – is the only person who can provide answers. Jared's brain is supposed to have access to Boutin's electronic memory, but when it seems that the attempt to transfer Boutin's memories has failed, Jared ends up with the special units. Jared fits the image of the perfect soldier, but Boutin's memories slowly begin to surface, and Jared intuitively discovers the reason behind Boutin's betrayal... and realizes that some enemies of humanity are thinking of far worse things than just its defeat.
