When humanity finally reached the stars, it discovered that only a few planets are suitable for life and that in the distant universe, a bloody war rages over each of them among many technologically advanced races. Although humanity is not among the most developed, it has been fiercely and relentlessly fighting far from home for decades to keep Earth itself safe. Most resources are controlled by the Colonial Defense Forces, which anyone whose earthly time has run out can join.
