Richard, Lord Rahl and ruler of D'Hara, seeker and bearer of the Sword of Truth, is mortally wounded. After the sorceress Nicci brings him back from the world of the dead, he discovers that his wife, the mother confessor Kahlan, has vanished and no one believes she ever existed. Moreover, the books of prophecy have changed. The pages referring to Richard are blank. Meanwhile, the armies of Emperor Jagang threaten D'Hara. Richard, confused and preoccupied with the events surrounding Kahlan, refuses to lead military units against Jagang's army. He convinces the people that they must stand up for themselves and sets out to uncover the truth from the dangerous witch Shota. However, the wizard Zedd suspects the truth, and thus he enters the mysterious labyrinth within the Fortress of the Wizards, from which only two people can find their way out... Desperate over Kahlan's disappearance, Richard ultimately strikes a deal with the witch Shota, exchanging the Sword of Truth for information about the Fire Cascade and the place of bones in the Deep Nothing. Here he learns that the Fire Cascade is a powerful spell capable of unraveling existence itself. Richard's companions are troubled.
