A fairy tale with historical elements takes place during the time of Rudolf II and the Thirty Years' War. The main character is the water sprite Tobijáš from Berounka, who accepts an invitation from the owner of the Mnichovo Hradiště estate, Vratislav III of Mitrovic, and settles in the castle pond. The poetically tuned narrative is set against the natural scenery of the Mnichovo Hradiště ponds and the Brdy hills. It incorporates an almost encyclopedic description of many species of fish and birds – as well as historical figures such as the astronomer and mathematician Martin Bacháček from Nouměřice, the lords of the Mnichovo Hradiště estate, and soldiers of the Swedish general Johan Banér. The plot develops from a calm to a lyrically idyllic atmosphere into a series of dramatic moments, both human and historical, and with the support of statements full of life wisdom, leads the reader to understand how everything is interconnected.
