Beschreibung
The literature written in Czech and German from the Czech lands has so far been told in separate stories that justified the distinctiveness of national literatures. This book, on the other hand, looks at the development of literature in the Czech lands as a whole for the first time. It traces across both Czech and German literature the ways in which literary works depicted and shaped the perception, actions, and feelings of individuals in the long 19th century, that is, the various forms of their subjectivity. It narrates the rise, nationalization, and crisis of the self-image of a person connected since the Enlightenment with the belief in the ability to cultivate and harmonize their inner self. Alongside famous figures such as Karel Hynek Mácha, Josef Kajetán Tyl, Božena Němcová, Adalbert Stifter, Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach, and Franz Kafka, hundreds of today lesser-known and forgotten authors also meet here, who innovated literary expressive means and collectively shaped the modern image of humanity. – Published in collaboration with the Institute of Czech Literature of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
