In the vicinity of the River of Two Medicines in present-day Montana, the Lone Eaters, a small band of Blackfeet, live in an ancient way. The men hunt and embark on expeditions against their enemies. The women prepare hides, sew beads, and raise children. But it is the year 1870, and more and more white settlers are moving into their land, forcing them to cope with significant historical changes. There is no doubt that they will succumb, and so in a situation where every decision is wrong, a race against time begins, which is simultaneously the last struggle for the survival of the tribe. Against the backdrop of these historical events, the author develops the intimate story of a young warrior named Obelstil the Crow, while ethnographically accurately depicting the daily life in the Blackfeet camps. Along with the protagonist, the reader experiences all the events that define the identity of the tribes from the Great Plains – embarking on horse thefts and war expeditions against the Crow Indians, traditional enemies of the Blackfeet, hunting bison, and participating in religious rituals. However, he is also a powerless witness to the disintegration of this traditional way of life due to contact with American civilization.
