A Brief History of Typography in Essays We all read. If not poetry, Russian novels, or philosophical treatises, then certainly road signs, labels on cookie packages, or text messages. Letters in any form have accompanied humanity for centuries, but they didn't come to us by themselves: someone invented them, drew them, and in earlier times, also cast them in molds and struck them so that printers could cover paper with them. Today, we can hardly imagine a freer environment than a drop-down menu with fonts in a text editor. History bursts forth from every typeface, and behind every loop or stem peeks Johannes Gutenberg. There are names we know: Helvetica, Times New Roman, Palatino, or Gill Sans. There are fonts from foils and tattered manuscripts: Bembo, Baskerville, and Caslon. There are options for various tastes: Bodoni, Didot, and Book Antiqua. But also the risk of mockery: Brush Script, Herculanum, Braggadocio, and Comic Sans. Just twenty-five years ago, we hadn't heard of them, and in the age of the typewriter, we couldn't even foresee them; today, we can't do without them. The book 'That Font of Mine' will guide you through the adventurous world of letters, punches, type foundries, graphic designers, ancient but not dusty history, as well as the hottest contemporary developments...
