After the successful publication of The History of Czechoslovak Comics of the 20th Century, half of its author team delved even deeper into the past, to the very beginnings of the domestic tradition of comic strips, which can be traced back to the mid-19th century and which had remained completely unexplored and undescribed until now. The presented book does not aim to establish an exact date or specific work as the 'beginning of the domestic comic strip,' but rather maps in detail the trends that led to the establishment of the domestic variant of comic creation and tracks the influences that shaped this formation. Source research of dozens of contemporary periodicals published in Czech and Slovak in the territory of the then Austro-Hungarian Empire allowed for the identification and differentiation of individual proto-comic forms of the 19th century, as they gradually emerged and asserted themselves in the domestic space, defining their boundaries and mutual relationships. The connections of these embryonic comic strips to caricature, newspaper illustration, and other concurrently occurring 'competing' forms were also monitored, as well as their influence on the later tradition of domestic comics and the context of contemporary foreign creation.
