For domestic enthusiasts of comic theory, there have been few opportunities in the Czech language to familiarize themselves with current issues and enduring concepts of "thinking about comics." The book In Panels and Bubbles: Chapters on Comic Theory aims to systematically address and offer various concepts and approaches for reading, interpreting, examining, and analyzing comic texts (whether specific isolated ones or in variously defined collections) in new ways. Attention is given, for example, to the relationships of comics to various characterization-stratification systems in culture (comics as a medium, genre, art), but it also thematizes the multimodality of comics (image in comics, text in comics) and the ways in which comics narrate (specific formal means, narration, seriality). Separate chapters are also dedicated to the topics of production-presentation aspects (publication format) and participants (author, production, reader) in the comic cultural field. The concluding chapter captures the history of scholarly research on comics from its timid beginnings to today's global expansion of so-called comics studies in basic coordinates.
