The image of Czech post-war avant-garde as it is today transmitted was primarily shaped based on poetic texts and programmatic writings. A previously overlooked component of the literary life of the time remains the rich prose production from 1919 to 1924, contributed to by members of both central avant-garde groups, Devětsil and the Literary Group. The anthology Don't Cry, Get Up and Shoot! is an attempt to revise the canonical interpretation of the chosen period and present to a wider audience the key prose texts of the "short story epidemic" of the early twenties. The anthology brings together stories from prominent (V. Vančura, J. Wolker, L. Blatný, Č. Jeřábek, etc.) as well as lesser-known (M. Nohejl, K. Hradec, I. Suk, B. Vlček, etc.) authors from the circles of Devětsil and the Literary Group; most of the stories are now available only in periodicals and less accessible book collections.
