Beschreibung
The collection of short stories Trees and Stones from 1947, authored by Dušan Pala (1924–1945), was recognized by Václav Černý (First and Second Notebook on Existentialism) as a type of poetics that is not very common in the contemporary context. Černý's connection to the discourse of existentialism still seems logical today, while it is important to emphasize that Pala's poetics appears more natural in this connection than that of authors from the group around Kamil Bednář. However, Pala's texts correspond in many ways with the poetics of modernists from the 1940s such as Jiří Kolář, Jan Hanč, or Josef Jedlička, particularly in their reflection on the mundane, repetition, monotony, banality, emptiness, and shapelessness of life projects. Thus, Pala's book intertwines several contemporary languages in a specific way. It does not merely represent a historical document but a still vibrant literature. The volume contains an edition of the original collection Trees and Stones supplemented by a study by Vladimír Papoušek.
