This Czech-language poetry book presents the work of Rose Ausländer (1901–1988), a poet who wrote in German and English. Born in Chernivtsi in Bukovina, she belongs, alongside Paul Celan, Nelly Sachs and Hilde Domin, to a group of authors of Jewish origin who gave poetic expression in German—their mother tongue, but also the language of the oppressors and murderers of their families—to experiences of the Holocaust, the ghetto and exile, helping to shape German poetry in the second half of the twentieth century. “And God gave us / the word / and we live / in the word,” she writes in one poem. For Ausländer, the poetic word became both home and life; her collected works contain more than three thousand poems.
