Kameny, cesty a paměť Broumovska – Burda František (2025)

The book Stones, Paths, and Memory of Broumovsko primarily deals with the changes in the landscape and settlement of the Broumovsko microregion, which is part of the territory and genius loci of the Sudetes, against the backdrop of the anthropology of home. The first part focuses on the material and spiritual nature of the memory of the Broumov landscape. It specifically addresses the cultural phenomenon of paths in relation to the process of "dwelling." The second part provides a cultural-historical delineation of the Broumovsko area, focusing on the factors of integration changes of local residents into the local community, such as demographic development, ethnic composition, migration of residents, and religious affiliation. It also discusses the transformation of cultural meanings of sacred landscape elements. All of this is methodologically framed by the qualitative method of art-based research.
In the book, two dimensions are thus interconnected. On one hand, a performative attempt to revive the historical memory of Broumovsko and draw the reader into empathetic participation in the omnipresent past – to experience in a new, perhaps unexpected way how much the past is a part of ourselves and how it co-determines the shape of our present. The second dimension is a historical-anthropological outline of the cultural uniqueness of Broumovsko.
