Beschreibung
The collective monograph Giving Birth to Violence loosely follows the thematic book series Body, which published four anthropological monographs focusing on the body and corporeality as a cultural phenomenon between 2014 and 2020. The book Giving Birth to Violence addresses the recently defined phenomenon of obstetric violence, which permeates the care and practices surrounding one of the central events of human bodily existence – childbirth and birth. The authors present, through sociocultural, biomedical, and legislative perspectives, the factors that cause obstetric violence to be disturbingly common in how we give birth. While Czech healthcare celebrates success with excellent results in perinatology, the depicted multicolored image of maternity care in the Czech Republic prompts reflection on whether the quality of obstetrics can be reduced to black-and-white survival statistics.
