The book Names by Pavel Florensky has become a significant phenomenon since its publication. This treatise brought many new impulses not only to the Russian philosophical-theological environment: it pointed out the fact that the roots of various directions in European philological research (in this case, onomatology) surprisingly took hold in contemporary Russia in parallel since the late 19th century, that Eastern European researchers brought quite interesting accents to these discussions, and that later – roughly from the 1960s – the famous Russian (or rather Tartu) semiotic school built upon these foundations, which subsequently significantly inspired Western philology. ***** Florensky's ideas continue to inspire today, both in the philosophical or theological fields as well as in philological or semiotic ones.
