The book is a joint work of four educators of future teachers. Their primary goal was to open up space for strengthening the student's or learner's own perspective. Self-assessment is therefore conceived not only as one of the methods of formative assessment but as a complex phenomenon, the use of which is intended to support the student and serve their development. Through an overview of existing theoretical-empirical knowledge and the empirical findings of the authors based on samples of students and educators from one institution preparing teachers for their profession, the text simultaneously reveals that the successful implementation of these potentially beneficial practices into education is a process fraught with many pitfalls. The most common of these include the consequences of unreflected ways of exercising control and power on the part of teachers, institutions, or entire educational systems. Rectifying this area cannot be done without methodological and systemic support from educators, and on both sides, without honest and deep reflection on one's own attitudes and values, including how to understand one's professional role and identity.
