The publication Fake News and the Politics of Classical Greece examines the works of the classics of Greek historiography, Herodotus and Thucydides, from a somewhat unusual perspective, as well as other contemporary texts that comment on political events in the Athenian polis. It particularly focuses on the texts of philosophers and dramatists from the second half of the 5th century BC. A partial aim of the work is to formulate a definition of the phenomenon of fake news, based on which it would be possible to detach this phenomenon from the present and show that it can already be encountered in ancient sources. Furthermore, the work attempts to demonstrate specific cases of fake news in Athenian politics and critically interpret comments on this phenomenon in selected works of drama and philosophy. Thus, the central theme of the book is the story (and influence) of the first documented potential fake news in the Greek democratic society of the 5th century BC. The main goal of the work is to describe and illustrate through examples the principle of how fake news functions as a very complex information mechanism.
