Beschreibung
Saint Ephrem the Deacon (circa 306–373) came from the northern Syrian city of Nisibis. In his youth, he stayed in mountain monasteries, and when his spiritual leader Jacob became the bishop of Nisibis, Ephrem served as a deacon in the cathedral temple. He also led liturgical singing and prepared catechumens for baptism in the cathedral school. When the Christians of Nisibis had to leave the city, both the bishop and the deacon went to Urfa-Edessa, a significant center of Christian scholarship. Saint Ephrem was very well acquainted with the Holy Scriptures, especially its Syriac synopsis Diatessaron, to which he wrote commentaries. Based on the Scriptures and other biblical narratives, he composed liturgical hymns for individual feasts of the church year. In Czech translation, the Hymns on Paradise, Easter Hymns, and now a selection of his hymns on the Nativity of the Lord and Epiphany are also presented.
